We’re almost through January and boy has this winter actually felt like winter! Even winter can’t stop us from getting out on the water and enjoying the time spent on it. There have been many days of single digits and teens, but we still manage to make it out on the water. Rods have broke, guides have froze up, and anchor systems have stopped working, but fish have been caught and smiles have been made. If you are one to brave the below freezing temps, be careful how you get the ice off of your guides, look for the deeper slower water, don’t go to far out on the ice shelves, and try pink and purple flies. The pink lightning bug is a definite goto bug this time of year for us, follow that behind a hot beaded rainbow czech nymph, and you’ll have a great combination! If you feel like swinging streamers, try thin mint variations of the woolly bugger, our very own Jim’s AOF bugger, and kreelex patterns of various color combinations. Just remember to bundle up, put on your warm hat, and go out and have some fun!
